Esther Donkor

Biography

Esther Donkor was born in 1985 in Cologne as the daughter of a Ghanaian father and German mother, and she completed her studies (B.A.) there in 2011 in German language and literature and English studies. Her dissertation entitled “Bitches & Queens – Women in U.S. Hip Hop” passed with distinction and was published in 2014. That same year, she co-founded the online magazine KrauseLocke, one of the aims of which

is to increase the confidence of Afro-German women. She and director Nancy Mac Granaky-Quaye run the film project “eyeswideopen”, where they produce reportages, documentaries and short films on a range of niche social themes. In 2015, her autobiographical travelogue „Wurzelbehandlung – Deutschland, Ghana und ich“ was published in 2015, in which Esther gives an account of her first trip to her father’s homeland.

She describes herself as a “free creative individual” and works as a writer, blogger and member of the FilmInitiativ festival team. As the creator of the KrauseLocke.de blog, she was interviewed by Jana Pareigis for her film AFRO.DEUTSCHLAND.
