Biography

Rehad Desai is a producer, director and the founder of production company Uhuru Productions (Johannesburg and Cape Town). In 1997, he completed his Master’s degree in social history at the University of the Witwatersrand. He then entered the TV and film industry as a current affairs journalist, and soon after moved on to focus his energy on historical and socio-political documentary films. In 2000, he completed a post-graduate degree in TV and film production, followed by a diploma in documentary filmmaking in 2009. He has produced over 20 documentaries, many of which he directed himself, that have been broadcast internationally and been received with critical acclaim. His film MINERS SHOT DOWN about the South African police’s massacring of striking workers at a platinum mine in Marikana won the audience prize for Best Documentary at the 2014 Afrika Film Festival Köln. His new film THE GIANT IS FALLING reminds us that the ANC government was jointly responsible for the massacre and the distressing footage underlines the continuing political and moral demise of the once highly esteemed freedom movement under the current

leadership of corrupt President Jacob Zuma.
