Joël Karekezi

Biography

Joël Karekezi completed his studies as a film director at the French film school Cinecours in 2008. In 2009 he shot his
first short film THE PARDON, which won awards at the Amakula International Film Festival in Uganda and the Silicon
Valley African Film Festival. His debut feature IMBABAZI: THE PARDON received funding from Göteborg Film Festival
and won the main prize at the Luxor African Film Festival in Egypt. For his most recent film LA MISÉRICORDE DE LA
JUNGLE (MERCY OF THE JUNGLE), an anti-war thriller, he was invited to many festivals, including Cannes and Locarno,
and it won the main award at FESPACO 2019 in Ouagadougou, the Étalon d’Or de Yennenga.
