Biography
Berni Goldblat is originally from Switzerland, but he has long since lived in his adopted home of Burkina Faso. He has been shooting, producing and distributing his documentary films there since 1999. In 2000, he co-founded “Cinomade”, an initiative in Bobo-Dioulasso aiming to create and distribute tools that increase audiovisual awareness and which takes an interactive approach to filmmaking. In 2006, he established his own independent production company “Les films du Djabadjah”.
His documentary THE HILLSIDE CROWD about the working conditions in a gold mine in Burkina Faso was shown at more than 50 festivals and won him several awards. Since 2011, Berni Goldblat has held five scriptwriting workshops for young African writers in Bobo-Dioulasso. Since 2012, he has also run an initiative that campaigns for the reopening of Burkina Faso’s second-largest city’s only cinema, “Cinema Guimbi” (www.cineguimbi.org). FilmInitiativ also supports the campaign. In 2017, Berni Goldblat was President of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), an Oscars-like awards ceremony for African films in Nigeria. WALLAY is his first fulllength feature film. It received its global premiere at the 2017 Berlinale and was released in cinemas in France in June.
