Biography

Maïmouna N`Diaye was born in France and grew up in Guinea. At the age of 18, she returned to her country of birth to study there and to work as an actress, TV presenter and director. She shot a number of documentaries, including WARBASSANGA (1998), which looks at the origins of the contemporary dance in Burkina Faso. In 1996, she moved to the Ivory Coast and lived through the political conflicts and civil war there between 1999 and 2004. Eye-witnesses talk about their experiences during that time in her four-part documentary series TRANCHES DE VIES (2009). Maïmouna N`Diaye has appeared on-screen at the Cologne African Film Festival many times as an actress in short films, including BANDITS CINÉMA und TEMEDY (1998) and in TROIS FABLES AFRICAINES (“Three African Fables”) (2000) about whites in Africa, made by her husband Luis Marquès and his theatre partner Claude Gnakourie. Marquès also produced the feature film L‘ OEIL DU CYCLONE, in which Maïmouna N`Diaye plays the lead female role. She won the award for Best Actress at the FESPACO Pan-African Film Festival in Burkina Faso and at other festivals. Maïmouna N`Diaye currently lives with her family in Ouagadougou.
