Biography

Yara Costa is a journalist and director from Mozambique. After living in Angola and South Africa and working as a
reporter in Brazil, she decided to start making film adaptations of largely unknown African stories as a means of
counteracting the negative stereotypes that often dominate western media. In 2009 she received a scholarship on the
News & Documentary graduate programme at New York University. In 2011 she shot her first film WHY ARE THEY
HERE? CHINESE STORIES IN AFRICA. At the 17th Afrika Film Festival Köln she will present her documentary ENTRE
EU E DEUS (BETWEEN GOD AND I) about the rise of fundamentalist ideas in Mozambique, using the example of
a young woman who advocates the introduction of Sharia law.
