Ludo de Witte

Biography

Ludo de Witte is a sociologist and author, who has long researched Belgian colonial history and the current situation of the former Belgian colonies (including for projects such as ARD and BBC television documentaries). In 1996, he published a book about the UN intervention in Congo after the country’s independence. In 2000, he published his research on the responsibility of Belgian and American governments and secret services for the murder of the first prime minister of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba (The Assassination of Lumumba). Upon FilmInitiativ’s invitation, de Witte also presented this book in Cologne in 2002. Last year, he published documents regarding Belgian involvement in the murder of Prince Louis Rwagasore, the first prime minister of Burundi. Following the film RWAGASORE, he will present his research at the festival.

He is currently working on examining the background of Mobutu Sese Seko’s takeover of the Congo in the mid-1960s.
