Biography

Karim Aïnouz, born in Fortaleza in 1966, is a Brazilian-Algerian film director and visual artist. He has shot numerous feature films and documentaries that have seen him invited to film festivals all over the world, including Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Rio de Janeiro. When Karim Aïnouz visited Algeria in 2019, he actually wanted to produce a film about his father’s homeland. Instead, he got involved in the mass protests against the corrupt government. Through friends, he became acquainted with experienced documentary filmmaker and activist NARDJES A. and decided to film 24 hours in her life on 8th March 2019, International Women’s Day. His portrait of the brave young woman had its German premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlinale 2020 and is going to be introduced in Cologne in person by the multi-award-winning director.
