Biography

Born in Mumbai Ritesh grew up in a middle-class family in Mumbai, India. His father Joginder Batra, worked in the Merchant Navy of India and his mother Manju Kapoor Batra, is a house wife. Ritesh completed his high school from in Mumbai and later went to United States of America to complete his higher studies. Ritesh worked as a consultant at “Delloitte” after graduating from Drake University, Iowa in Economics. But after three years of working he went back to school to chase his childhood dream of filmmaking. He attended New York University but dropped out of the film school. (Wiki)
Before his now famous "Dabba", he tried his hand at making shorts which were shown in many an international film festival. His latest to date, Café Regular, Cairo (2012) earned him the International Film Critics Association Award (FIPRESCI) at the International Film Festival of Oberhausen, received special mentions from the jury at the Chicago and Tribeca Film Festivals and was acquired by Arte.
In 2009 his project then titled "Story of Ram" was selected by the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Lab later to bloom into "Dabba" (The Lunchbox). After shooting the film, Batra chose to stay in Mumbai with his wife Claudia. In 2013, he was working on a series of shorts and on "The Photograph", his next feature.
