Abstract

On Christmas Eve 1989, when director Patricia Bbaale Bandak was two years old, her mother was murdered in the family home in Uganda. On Christmas Eve 2013, Patricia gave birth to a daughter whom she named Imelda, in homage to her late mother. Desperate to get to know her mother and to raise the questions that no one has dared to ask, the director travels to Uganda. Can we ever really discover the truth and reconstruct the past? How do you paint a portrait of a person when culture dictates that you should not speak ill of the dead? DEATH OF A SAINT starts from a personal quest and goes on to tackle universal themes such as motherhood and forgiveness.
