Abstract

This fictional short by Mallence and Patrice Babatunde Bart-Williams was made in Sierra Leone, their father`s homeland. Gaston Bart-Williams was one of the first black students at Cologne University in the 1960s. He himself later worked as a filmmaker before losing his life in a boat accident while shooting in Sierra Leone in 1990.  He wrote poems and was critical of Europe`s attitude towards Africa during his time working as a journalist. Mallence and Patrice Babatunde Bart-Williams` work (as writers and producers for theatre, music and film) continues the work of their father. Their short film tells the story of young men in Freetown and their daily struggle for survival. The actors were all supplied by the creative collective FOLORUNSHO, formed in 2011 by young men aged 14 to 22 and supported by Mallence. The young men were living in horrendous conditions in a Freetown gutter called Lion Base. They have lived through poverty, civil war and personal tragedy, but have managed to carve out a better future for themselves as designers. Their extraordinary fashion creations have since been featured at Colette in Paris and SOTO in Berlin. The film`s fictitious story plays out in their city - to the music of Patrice.
