Abstract

On the Ennedi Plateau in northeastern Chad, Kellou is haunted by dark visions she does not understand. In this village nestled among mountains and canyons, withdrawn from the world, Kellou is considered a “blood girl,” marked by the seal of misfortune. Her mother died giving her life. The arrival of Aya, a single woman, will disrupt her existence and help her come to terms with this gift inherited from her mother. SOUMSOUM, LA NUIT DES ASTRES follows Kellou’s path toward emancipation and questions the rigidity of belief systems. With this feature film, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun continues his exploration of the intimate and political fractures of his country.
