Abstract

Teenager Janno lives with his family in a conservative religious community in South Africa’s former Orange Free State. In the harsh world of the Boers – the settlers whose ancestors were the first to colonise South Africa – gender roles are very clearly defined. Even the sensitive Janno tries his best to live by the conventions of the white Afrikaans minority on his parents’ farm. His mother’s affection is the reward for his efforts.

But one day she brings the orphaned boy Pieter home with her, a drug-addicted street kid. What starts off as a healthy brotherly relationship between the two young men gradually develops into a power struggle for parental affection. Etienne Kallos’s debut film conveys the mood along South Africa’s “Bible belt” and features stunning cinematography, with its backdrops ranging from vast sparse grasslands to cramped, gloomily lit rooms. The film was invited to festivals all over the world as a result, and won awards in Italy and Tunisia, amongst others.
