Abstract

LITTLE ONE tells the story of a six-year-old girl who is sexually abused and left severely injured in a field near a Johannesburg township. Pauline, a middle-aged woman, finds the child and takes her to the nearest hospital for medical care. Against the wishes of her husband, she cares for the child and tries to find out who committed such a crime. Director Darrel Roodt’s film is based on a true story. An interview with the abused girl moved him to capture her story.

The film was South Africa’s official submission for the Oscars in 2013, and has received several awards. In 2013 at the International Film Festival in New York, it was honoured as best feature film and Lindiwe Ndlovu, who portrays Pauline, won Best Actress.
