Abstract

The 2014 festival patron, Dani Kouyaté of Burkina Faso, will inaugurate this year’s festival opening. International guests whose films are to be shown during the first festival weekend have also been invited to take part, including Haminiaina Ratovoarivony (Madagascar), Andrey Samouté Diarra (Mali), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Abdellah Taïa (Morocco), Filipe Henriques (Guinea-Bissau), Victor Viyuoh (Cameroon), Hannah Awo Nkeba Bonney (Ghana) and Jude Senyo Akwetey (Ghana).

The opening films evoke the rich narrative tradition of Africa (in this case, Madagascar) and the death of cinema in many lands across the continent (with Morocco as an example), as well as the “Queer Africa” thematic focus of the first festival weekend (with a short documentary from South Africa).

Musical entertainment will be provided by Kenya’s Steven Ouma and his band: guitarist Mandjao Fati from Guinea-Bissau, Cologne’s own Martin Kübert (piano, viola, and accordion), Bernd Keul (bass), Max Serges (percussion) and Heiko Thurm (drums).
