Abstract

The first image is reminiscent of a Western: director NizamNajjarstands with his camera in a dusty desert landscape in Libya. Yet the peaceful atmosphere is deceptive. It is the calm before the storm of the revolt against the Gaddafi dictatorship. People in the streets of Tripoli are already celebrating the liberation, though parts of the country are still occupied by Gaddafi’s troops, and the situation is complicated. The filmmaker tries to approach his homeland again after ten years of exile in Norway. He captures pro-revolutionary groups and collects his observations in the form of a video diary, whether he documents costly battles on the front or controversial discussions among his relatives about how to construct Libyan society in the future. Following Gaddafi’s fall, Najjar stayed in Libya, experiencing the first elections, which were not without conflict. He poses critical questions about the chances for creating a free and peaceful future in his country, in which highly armed militias struggle for power.
