Abstract

The protagonists of VIVRE RICHE are like the many other Ivorian youngsters who have become disoriented by the many years of civil war. “Rolex the Portuguese” tried his luck in neighbouring Burkina Faso, but he failed and is now back in Abidjan trying to make some cash – through unconventional means. He and his mates live off internet scams, taking advantage of the wealth of white women who come in search of love or new experiences. For as long as their unreliable internet connection permits, the boys flirt with the women on their webcam for cash, which they later blow in clubs and bars. Their role model for their internet racket is the now-deceased musician Doug Saka, who invented the coupé-décalé style of dance music, which became famous all over West Africa and made it over to Europe. He raved about his hedonistic lifestyle and never shied away from a scam along the way.
