Abstract

Chicago, late 1970s. House music emerges in underground clubs, driven by the black and queer community in search of emancipation and freedom. Vince Lawrence recounts the fall of disco, symbolised by the infamous “Disco Demolition Night”, with its racist and homophobic overtones. With some savings, he bought a synthesiser and, with a group of friends, composed what is considered to be the first house track. MOVE YA BODY: THE BIRTH OF HOUSE reveals one of the most overlooked stories in black music. Director Elegance Bratton pays tribute to these young Chicago pioneers who have kept the world dancing to this day.
