Abstract

Almost 40 years after independence, INDEPENDÊNCIA focuses on the armed struggle that led to the overthrowing of Angola’s Portuguese colonial rulers. In this fascinating documentary we hear from the people who fought in the liberation struggle, as they revive their memories from the time. They talk about their sacrificial deployment in the anti-colonial guerrilla army to fight against the increasingly brutal colonial powers, about their fate as political prisoners in Portuguese dungeons and about their hopes for the post-liberation era.
This lavishly produced film project was initiated by the Associação Tchiweka de Documentação (ATD ), an association of Angolan researchers, who have spent five years delving into their country’s past with the aim of recording statements of those who were directly or indirectly involved in the anti-colonial struggles and to preserve them for posterity.
