Abstract

Addis Ababa, 1989: Mina is 16 years old and Jewish. The Ethiopian civil war has been part of her everyday life since she was born. The streets descend into chaos and fear. Without prior warning, troops from the military junta under Mengistu Haile Mariam sweep the city’s streets recruiting young men. Mina’s brother was one of the unlucky abductees. He returned without his right arm. Their grandmother, where Mina and her

brother live, is planning to emigrate to Israel, to escape the war once and for all. The plan does not include the person Mina loves the most, however: her boyfriend Eli, who is hiding from the soldiers in a fig tree in a nearby forest. Mina concocts a plan to rescue him.

FIG TREE is a coming-of-age drama based on the childhood memories of director Aäläm-Wärqe Davidian, who left Ethiopia at the age of eleven.
