Abstract

Amidst the turbulence sparked by the demonstrations on Tahrir Square in Cairo, numerous prisoners managed to escape from prisons. Whilst the “Arab Spring” was being celebrated in Egypt after the fall of Mubarak`s dictatorship, the film`s protagonist – one of the escapees – has trouble getting back on track in the changed city. He slips into conflict between Muslims and Coptic Christians, Islamists and secularists, and observes the conflicts that characterise post-revolutionary Egyptian society from a critical distance.

Many people in Egypt have been displeased with the image of his country shown in the film, says director Ahmad Abdalla. Yet when he presented his internationally successful feature film MICROPHONE in May 2011 at “Game Over”, the North African film section in Cologne, Abdalla said that for him, it`s all about changing his country through the means of film: artistically, politically, and socially.

The film celebrated its world premiere at the International Film Festival in Toronto, and has been selected as best feature film in several festivals, including the 2013 Festival international du cinéma méditerranéen de Montpellier.
