Abstract

From a hotel in Canton, China, where African traders buy goods, to the mountains of Lesotho where Chinese entrepreneurs do business – Teboho Edkins depicts these far-reaching economic relations against the breathtaking backdrop of Lesotho’s mountains. In the region of Thaba Tseka, two cultures come together without really converging. Is it possible that coming into contact with one another might cause them to change? Could the globalised economy actually have a positive effect on the traditional cattle breeders in the mountains of Lesotho, whose livelihoods and prosperity depend on the size of their herds? Teboho Edkin’s docu-Western is more reminiscent of the metaphor ‘man is wolf to man’, as it exposes a kind of economic ‘cannibalism’ in the relationship between Africa and China.
