Abstract

In Dédougou, Burkina Faso, director Chloé Aïcha Boro's family courtyard is the scene of conflict. When her uncle, the region's religious authority and guarantor of the transmission of Islam, dies, the balance in the courtyard is shattered. This meeting place and family life, but also a place of passage and prayer for believers, becomes the centre of a fundamental conflict between the age-old tradition of transmission by oral legacy and modern, Western-inspired justice. AL DJANAT, meaning the original paradise, deals with the question of inheritance in West Africa. Based on a personal story, the director explores the complexity and consequences of a changing society.
