Abstract
Since the death of her husband, Abla has been living as a single mother with her eight-year-old daughter in Casablanca’s medina quarter, where she makes a living selling homebaked pastries. One day, a young woman named Samia knocks on her door, looking for work. Samia is pregnant, but not married, which is why her family mustn’t find out about her pregnancy. Initially turned away by Abla, she roams the streets of the medina and sleeps rough outside Abla’s house. Eventually, Abla takes her in, first just for one night, extending to several, and fi nally, on the insistence of Abla’s daughter, until the baby’s born. Over time, the difficult relationship between the two women becomes more trusting. This film shows once again the dramatic consequences obsolete moral concepts and power structures have on maledominated Moroccan society and the women affected by it.
