Abstract

Fatima-Zahra and her son Selim try to keep their heads above water, as the title LES DAMNÉS NE PLEURENT PAS (THE DAMNED DON'T CRY) suggests. Selim has a part-time job. His mother, for her part, has hopes of finding a man who will take care of her. When scandalous incidents force them to go on the run, Selim learns about his mother's past. After a journey from city to city, they finally settle in Tangier. Due to their differing personal goals, they take different paths. In a mixture of melodrama and neorealism, Fyzal Boulifa stages the power of the mother-son relationship, reveals taboos and shows the desire for change in the face of oppression by a conservative society.
