Abstract

Ghana was the first African country to overcome European colonial rule. Its first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was a staunch Pan-Africanist and announced to his compatriots at the Declaration of Ghana`s Independence in Accra: “Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa.” Dozens of African countries soon followed suit and declared independence, founding the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. Its logo was drafted by Samuel Agyei Boateng, a graphic artist from Ghana, to whom the film student Joseph Akwasi Akiwumi dedicated a cineastic memorial fifty years later with his short film A TRIBUTE TO UNITY.
