Abstract

DEAD DONKEYS FEAR NO HYENAS is a documentary thriller that explores the shady practices of land grabbing, a modern form of colonisation, whereby foreign investors buy up or lease huge areas of arable land in developing countries to grow plants for biofuel or vegetables to sell in their supermarkets back home, without showing the slightest consideration for the local population. Driven by their greed to make a profit, they join the rush for the “green gold”, destroying everything that stands in their way as they do so. The peasant farmers are brutally evicted from the land they have lived off for generations.

The film accompanies Ethiopian environmental journalist Argaw Ashine, who researches the land grabs and publishes reports on the consequences for those affected by them. For this he has incurred the wrath of the Ethiopian government, who have a huge vested interest in the million-dollar deals; he ultimately had to go into exile.

Joakim Demmer will receive the North Rhine-Westphalia Eine-Welt-Filmpreis (One World Film Prize) for his politically engaged documentary, and it will be awarded on 10 November at Filmforum im Museum Ludwig.
