Abstract

Balla Diarra, a young farmer, works as a porter in Bamako. He crosses paths with Balla Traoré, a young engineer returning from Europe, who takes him under his wing and hires him in his factory. Inspired by liberal ideas acquired during his studies in Europe, Balla Traoré seeks to improve working conditions in the factory. In this feature film, director Souleymane Cissé depicts the political and economic tensions that ran through Malian society in the 1970s, marked by the emergence of a working class and the excesses of a corrupt political system. BAARA, the first feature film produced in Mali, won the Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO in 1979.
