Abstract

20-year-old Ladji lives in Mali and struggles through life as a bus conductor. He works hard to try to get his sister away from prostitution. His only hope is to get promoted to bus driver, but he keeps getting refused. Out of desperation, Ladji turns to a drug dealer friend of his, and starts smuggling cocaine from Guinea to Mali for him. He soon becomes a big shot in the scene and can afford things he’d previously never dreamt of being able to buy. But his new life is by no means free from danger...

WÙLU is the debut film of Franco-Malian director Daouda Coulibaly, which – according to French newspaper “Le Point” – could be described as a Malian SCARFACE. The thriller won the audience prize at the 2016 Amiens International Film Festival and main actor Ibrahim Koma won the Best Actor award at FESPACO 2017 in Ouagadougou for his compelling portrayal of the reluctant drug dealer.
