Abstract

This docufiction centres on the investigative questions posed by journalist Nedjma and her colleague Mustapha as they try to find out how people in the Muslim-majority Algeria imagine paradise. They travel right across the country looking for answers. They have conversations at markets in Algiers and in mosques on the edge of the Sahara, with naive youngsters and eloquent rappers, with feminists and artists, with Islamic dignitaries and secular writers, including Boualem Sansal and Kamel Daoud. The result is an on-screen sociological analysis of Algerian society, all shot in black and white, which brings to light some fascinating, amusing, flabbergasting – and at times downright disturbing – insight.
