Abstract

The festival will be opened by Hawa Essuman who takes on this year’s patronage duties. The director won the
audience award for best documentary at the 16th Afrika Film Festival Köln in 2018 for her film SILAS. At this
year’s festival she will present her feature film SOUL BOY at a screening for schoolchildren (26.9., 10:00) and an
evening of short films from East Africa that she selected with producer Fibby Kioria from Uganda (22.9., 20:00).
Dani Kouyaté from Burkina Faso will introduce the main theme of this year’s festival, which is “fundamentalism”. The
film and theatre director from Burkina Faso has been assisting FilmInitiativ since 2017 in compiling films for the festival
themes and providing an African perspective on migration. This year he will present a selection of films on this year’s
theme of fundamentalism and migration (22.9., 14:00), as well as his feature film OUAGA SAGA at a screening for
schoolchildren (20.9., 10:00). Directors who will attend the opening event include Azlarabe Alaoui (Morocco), Mahmoud Ben Mahmoud (Tunisia), Rehad Desai (South Africa), Nasib Farah (Somalia/Denmark), Lula Ali Ismaïl (Djibouti), Dani Kouyaté (Burkina Faso), Gabriel Martins (Brazil), Mantegaftot Sileshi Siyoum (Ethiopia/Germany) and Marwa Zein (Sudan).
